Business
Our client employs thousands of people across hundreds of UK sites. It is a long established and highly respected name in its market that has revised, renewed and enhanced its operations, culture and performance in recent years.
Its Infrastructure Group is a growth business in rapid scale-up which has seen revenues double in recent times to around £500m and which are set to double again in the next three years. With a focus on and a dominant market position in the construction sector, coupled with the government’s Future Homes Standard coming into effect, which requires new housing moves away from gas heating by 2025, our client is ideally placed to support its customers with innovative approaches and next generation products in their transition to net-zero. In addition to energy, our client also designs, configures and supplies everything necessary for all other utility connections too, such that the new build projects of its customers benefit from water, drainage, EV charging, broadband, gas – and soon hydrogen – that are robust, reliable, complaint and metered. Solar, wind and heat pump technology for individual homes and for district heat networks is also resulting in significant new opportunities for our client.
This business is set to play a major role in the decarbonisation of UK housing stock and has the potential to make a huge contribution to the achievement of our national net-zero targets.
Role
Reporting to the Group COO, the MD will be responsible for the P&L of the Infrastructure Group and will also have direct input to the senior leadership team on the formulation and realisation of overall Group strategy, which will be expected and encouraged. The Infrastructure Group has a substantial workforce of hundreds of people across dozens of sites, managed through a small team of senior direct reports who will require clear leadership and motivation to achieve what is required of them. This is an experienced and knowledgeable workforce which already performs well in a collaborative and mutually supportive workplace culture and is ready and willing to take on new challenges. This role is therefore primarily about strategic vision and commercial leadership. It is imperative that the MD engages with the market, customers, suppliers and staff to forge trusting partnerships and alliances. The MD must formulate and embed dynamic business models that will deliver new technologies and excellent service whilst consolidating and extending market share, accessing new markets, accelerating growth and targeting synergistic acquisitions. The role requires a combination of pragmatism, problem-solving, innovation and ideas, as well as a sharp focus on sales and profitability. The MD will need to establish themselves quickly, instil confidence in those around them and develop strong working relationships, especially with the Group CEO, Group CFO and Group COO as well as the management team of the Infrastructure Group.
